Our Journey
THE STORY BEHIND PRISHTINA BIENNALE
Prishtina Biennale is an independent art and culture organisation based in Prishtina, Kosovo, that was founded with the goal of providing a long-term and critical platform for contemporary art while actively contributing to social development. Since its founding, Prishtina Biennale has been dedicated to improving the overall condition of art and culture in the country by promoting artistic practices that challenge conventional boundaries and providing a space for reflection, dialogue, and engagement among artists, community, and institutions. The organisation plays an important role in increasing the non-governmental sector's influence in the field of art and culture, with the goal of creating a more conscious, resilient, and a powerful Kosovo cultural environment. The Prishtina Biennale's program promotes the development of critical perspectives and public awareness about the role of art as a powerful force for social transformation and collective identity.
Founded by Gazmend Ejupi and Michele Robecchi, PB serves as a platform for contemporary art, bridging cultural dialogues locally and internationally.
PB explores these themes through innovative exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative projects, fostering creative expression and preserving critical parts of Kosovo’s social history.

ULPIANA ART CENTER
COMMUNICATING WITH COMMUNITY
The Ulpiana shelter, once hidden and sealed, now opens itself as an artistic ground where history presses against the present. To curate in this space is not to decorate an abandoned structure, but to reflect upon its history, to turn its weight into resonance, and to allow its concrete walls to breathe anew.
Originally constructed in 1984 as a Cold War shelter, the Ulpiana Bunkers stand as one of Prishtina’s rare historical and architectural landmarks. Its existence speaks of fear, secrecy, and preparedness for a world perpetually threatened by conflict. Today, through its reactivation as an art and cultural space, it embodies a profound transformation: from a hidden refuge of war into an open site of artistic imagination and collective dialogue.
Supported by the Luxembourg Embassy in Kosovo and the Municipality of Prishtina, and framed within the Prishtina Biennale plan program, the Ulpiana Art Centre launches a trilogy of exhibitions titled Communicating with Community. This program does not treat the shelter merely as a backdrop but as an active participant in shaping meaning, a resonant architecture where past and present intertwine.
Communicating with the Community makes Ulpiana not only a neighbourhood but also a conceptual ground, a place where artistic practices intervene in public imagination and social space. Together, they form a dialogic arc that challenges, celebrates, and redefines what it means to create from and within Prishtina today.
